Nigeria to Develop Nations Integrated Coastal Zone Management Policy

The Federal Ministry of Environment has reiterated its commitment to the Development of the Nations Integrated Coastal Zone Management Policy (ICZM).

The Policy development is determined to ensure that the Integrated Coastal Zone Management Policy is an actionable document that safeguards the country coastlines for future generations.

Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Environment, Mr. Mahmud Kambari, represented by the Deputy Director Department of Erosion Flood and Coastal Zone Management, Mr. Kunle Awojemila, stated this at the Stakeholders Consultative Workshop on the Development of Integrated Coastal Zone All Management (ICZM) Policy and action plan for Nigeria, held in Abuja Nigeria’s capital.

Mr. Kambari, urged stakeholders which include policy makers, planners, researchers, and private actors to see the workshop not just as a forum for dialogue, but as a springboard for collaborative action.

‘’Let us reflect deeply and determine to bring the policy to reality’ He said.

He emphasised that the Ministry, “will ensure that the Integrated Coastal Zone Management Policy is owned by all, guided by evidence, and most importantly, will put the people, particularly the most vulnerable, at the center of all our planning and implementation efforts”.

’The Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) Policy is our coordinated national response to these challenges. It represents a transformative step toward a more structured, inclusive, and resilient approach to managing our coastal and marine ecosystems It provides a structured policy framework for harmonizing competing interests along our coasts, balancing environmental sustainability with economic growth, and strengthening the adaptive capacities of communities facing growing climate vulnerabilities.’’ he said.

The Director, Department Erosion Flood and Coastal Zone Management Ministry of Environment, Mr Usman Bokani, explained that the workshop marks a significant milestone in the country’s collective efforts to address the pressing challenges facing Nigeria’s coastal zones.

Mr. Bokani added that the development of an ICZM policy is crucial for ensuring the long-term sustainability of the coastal ecosystems, promoting economic growth, and improving the livelihoods of coastal communities in Nigeria.

’Our coastal zones face numerous challenges, including erosion, flooding, pollution, and climate change. These issues threaten infrastructure, livelihoods, ecosystems, and human health. However, I am confident that through collaborative efforts and informed decision-making, we can develop effective solutions to these challenges.’’ He stated.

’I look forward to productive discussions, innovative ideas, and collective efforts towards shaping a policy that benefits Nigeria’s coastal communities and ecosystems.’’ he added.

The Commissioner, Delta State Ministry of Environment, Mr Jamani Ejiro, represented by Desk Officer West Africa Coastal Area Management Program, Delta State, Ms Onokurhefe Judith, said that the development of an ICZM policy and action plan is a step in the right direction.

He stated that the framework will enable coordination across stakeholders, including government agencies, civil societies, and local coastal communities, to ensure the long-term sustainability of our coastal zones.

“Its goal is to improve the quality of life of citizens who depend on coastal resources, promote economic development and sustainable livelihoods, while maintaining the services provided by the coastal ecosystem.”

“However, our coastal zones face numerous challenges, including erosion, flooding. pollution (oil spills, domestic, solid, and plastic waste), and climate change and coastal vulnerability (changes in weather patterns, sea-level rise). These issues require a comprehensive and integrated approach to manage our coastal resources sustainably.’’ He explained.

In his remarks, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner, Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resource, Mr Nsikak Ekong, represented by Mrs Iquo Abia says the government of Akwa Ibom State, remains committed to protect the coastal zones, adding that the state will work closely with all stakeholders to ensure a successful development of ICZM policy and action plan for Nigeria.

’It is pertinent to note that through this collaborative effort, we can, enhance coastal resilience and adaptability, promote sustainable livelihoods, protect biodiversity and ecosystems and Foster community engagement and participation. Let’s work together to create a comprehensive policy and action plan that benefits our coastal communities and preserves our natural heritage for future generations.’’ He added.

The Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) Policy will provides a structured policy framework for harmonizing competing interests along the country’s coasts, balancing environmental sustainability with economic growth, and strengthening the adaptive capacities of communities facing growing climate vulnerabilities.
