The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting vulnerable populations during the 2025 World Red Cross Day celebration, themed “On the Side of Humanity.”
The commemorative event was held at the NRCS Head Office in Amawbia, Awka, Anambra State, and honoured the founding principles of the organisation as well as the tireless dedication of its volunteers and staff.

Speaking at the occasion, Prof. Charity Emelie, Chairman of the Anambra Branch of the NRCS, highlighted the Society’s mission to assist those affected by disasters, epidemics, armed conflicts, and poverty, particularly in remote and underserved communities.
“Our motto is: Through Humanity to Peace,” Prof. Emelie stated.
“We operate on the basis of fundamental principles such as humanity, impartiality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.”
Prof. Emelie also raised concerns over the increasing humanitarian needs in Anambra State, citing rising insecurity and recurrent flooding that have displaced residents in eight local government areas.
She appealed to Governor Chukwuma Soludo and other stakeholders for enhanced support, noting that these growing challenges are being met with dwindling funding.
“Humanitarian challenges are rising at an astronomical rate, while funding is dwindling,” she warned.
“We call on government and citizens alike to support the Red Cross so we may continue to stand on the side of humanity.”
Engr. Kingsley Okoye, Secretary of the Anambra Branch, disclosed that the celebration had been postponed due to the official visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the state.
He used the occasion to provide updates on the NRCS’s humanitarian activities over the past year.
“We distributed hygiene and sanitary kits to over 400 women and girls affected by the 2024 floods,” said Okoye.
“Additionally, relief materials and cash transfers were provided to 1,100 households.”
These interventions, he noted, were carried out in partnership with donor agencies, including the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Department (ECHO).
“The scale and complexity of today’s crises demand united action. No single actor can address these challenges alone,” Okoye remarked.
He emphasised the NRCS’s role as the lead first aid responder in Anambra State, encouraging the public to support its initiatives and contact the organisation through its emergency helpline (08124200735).
Key Initiatives Highlighted:
Distribution of Dignity Kits: Hygiene essentials for women and girls affected by flooding.
Cash Transfers: Over N231.55 million distributed to 3,200 households via ATM-enabled cards.
Free First Aid Training: Educational outreach on emergency response techniques for communities.
Strategic Partnerships: Collaborations with initiatives like Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo to promote community wellness and disaster preparedness.
Advocacy for Permanent Solutions: Urging the establishment of permanent holding centres in flood-prone communities.
In a touching display of solidarity, students from selected schools and children from Red Cross motherless babies’ homes in Onitsha and Nnewi joined the festivities, reflecting the inclusive spirit of World Red Cross Day.
